Kim Dougherty, MA, MFTC – Taking Clients!

Life and relationships are constantly evolving. Sometimes those changes bring opportunities for growth, and other times they leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of what comes next. Whether you’re seeking support as an individual or as a couple, therapy offers a space to better understand yourself, strengthen your relationships, and create lasting, meaningful change.

I believe every person and every relationship has its own unique rhythm, strengths, and challenges. My approach is not about deciding who is right or wrong or forcing a one-size-fits-all idea of what life or partnership should look like. Instead, I am here to guide and support you in building the life and relationships you envision.

Together, we’ll look beneath the surface of everyday challenges to better understand the deeper emotional needs and patterns at play. I strive to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can slow down, feel truly heard, and gain the insight, confidence, and practical tools needed to move forward with greater clarity.

For me, true mental and relational health is found in contentment rather than happiness. Happiness can be fleeting and intense, but contentment provides a stable, sustainable foundation for navigating life’s inevitable challenges and creating fulfilling relationships with yourself and the people who matter most.

Couples Therapy

I work with couples who are feeling disconnected, stuck in repetitive arguments, navigating life transitions, rebuilding trust, or simply wanting to strengthen an already healthy relationship. Together, we’ll work to understand the emotional patterns beneath conflict, improve communication, and build a stronger, more secure connection.

My approach is grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), helping couples better understand one another’s emotional needs and create relationships built on trust, emotional safety, and intentional connection. I believe every couple already brings strengths into the therapy room. My role is to help you build upon those strengths while creating new ways of communicating and connecting.

I also specialize in supporting adults (18+) navigating non-traditional relationship structures, including consensual non-monogamy and alternative relationship dynamics. My practice is warmly welcoming of LGBTQIA+, kink, and neurodivergent individuals and relationships.

Whether you’re thinking about opening your relationship, are brand new to consensual non-monogamy, or have been practicing it for years and suddenly feel like the “check engine light” has come on, I’m here to help you navigate the challenges that arise with greater clarity and confidence.

For couples considering opening their relationship, I enjoy providing pre-opening counseling to thoughtfully explore expectations, communication, boundaries, and the “what-ifs” before taking that next step.

While non-traditional relationships are an area of specialty, I am equally passionate about supporting monogamous couples. At the core of my practice is a simple belief: the healthiest relationship style is the one you choose intentionally. Regardless of relationship structure, healthy partnerships are built on communication, emotional safety, trust, and shared intention.

Individual Therapy

I believe that a healthy relationship with yourself is the foundation for how you navigate every other relationship in your life.

I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, and major life transitions. Together, we’ll strengthen your sense of self-worth and autonomy while helping you better understand the patterns that may no longer be serving you.

Our work is both practical and meaningful. We’ll develop skills to improve communication, establish healthy boundaries, manage difficult emotions, and navigate conflict with greater confidence. At the same time, we’ll explore the underlying thoughts, behaviors, and experiences contributing to your current challenges so you can create lasting change rather than simply managing symptoms.

My approach integrates psychoeducation, collaborative therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I believe you are the expert on your own life. My role is to provide guidance, education, support, and practical tools while we work together toward your goals.

My Approach

I believe you hold the keys to your contentment; it is my job to help you remember where you put them.

Whether we are working individually or as a couple, my goal is to guide and support you in consciously building the life and relationships you envision. Together, we’ll look beneath the surface of everyday stressors to understand the deeper emotional patterns influencing your thoughts, behaviors, and relationships.

Therapy is a collaborative process built on curiosity, compassion, and growth. My hope is that you leave each session with a deeper understanding of yourself, greater confidence in your ability to navigate life’s challenges, and practical tools that support lasting change.

More About Me

Clients often describe me as insightful, balanced, and fair. I naturally see multiple perspectives and help people make meaningful connections, allowing me to hold space for all sides of a situation. In our work together, you can expect a steady presence that both supports you and gently challenges you to grow.

Growing up with self-help enthusiasts, I developed an early and lasting fascination with personal growth, human behavior, and relationship dynamics. While books and self-help resources can provide valuable insight, I believe meaningful transformation happens through practice, support, and relationship. Much like a personal trainer helps someone apply what they know in the gym, therapy helps bridge the gap between understanding yourself and creating lasting change in everyday life.

I am also a strong believer in proactive and preventative care. Whether it’s premarital counseling, pre-opening counseling, relationship tune-ups before resentment builds, or navigating major life transitions, I believe investing in yourself and your relationships early can make a meaningful difference.

Outside of the therapy office, you’ll usually find me caring for my 200+ houseplants, spending time with my two dogs—Custos, my Italian Mastiff, and Buttercup, my pocket pittie—or watching videos about comedy, music, mental health, and, of course, plants.
